PPP prepares for emergency leadership system following Kim’s resignation as party leader.

Following the resignation of party leader Kim Gi-hyeon, the People Power Party (PPP) is set to transition to an emergency leadership committee system, as disclosed by the party’s floor leader on Thursday. Representative Yun Jae-ok unveiled this plan after extensive discussions with senior members and the party’s leadership to chart the course post-Kim’s departure.

Acknowledging the impracticality of convening a party convention in the current scenario, Yun emphasized the urgency to swiftly implement the emergency leadership committee system. He expressed the party’s commitment to promptly appointing a new leader for this committee.

While refraining from naming potential candidates, Yun highlighted the party’s criteria, emphasizing the significance of public trust, relatability, and the capability to steer the party to victory in the upcoming April general elections.

Interestingly, Yun mentioned that the committee leader need not be a political figure, hinting at a broad spectrum of prospective candidates. Regarding the PPP’s election nomination committee for the general elections, Yun assured adherence to party regulations, aiming to establish the committee within the stipulated deadline of January 10.

The decision for Kim Gi-hyeon to step down arose amidst mounting pressure for party reform ahead of April’s general elections. His resignation followed the withdrawal of another prominent figure, Rep. Chang Je-won, a close confidant of President Yoon Suk Yeol, from reelection.

Kim, who held the party leadership for merely nine months following his convention election supported by Yoon, triggered speculations about potential successors, including Justice Minister Han Dong-hoon, PPP’s innovation committee chairman Ihn Yo-han, and veteran politician Kim Han-gil, recognized as the head of the presidential committee on national unity.
